Sawyer was promoted to Sergeant Major May 9, 1864, of the First Regiment Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was wounded in the Civil War, but survived. The photograph is part of a group of images collected by Colonel John G. Hudson, First Iowa Infantry, African Descent, of federal soldiers and officers stationed at Helena, Phillips County, Arkansas, 1863-1864. The luxury tax stamp indicates the photograph was made between August 1, 1864 and August 1, 1866. The three cent green stamp indicates the photograph cost between 25 and 50 cents.
